Slip-ring motor for Ex zone 22 hazardous area
MENZEL produced a technically and mechanically interchangeable slip ring motor on behalf of a coal mill in Senegal. The coal mill drive supplies the plant with finely ground carbon dust to cover the primary energy requirement and is designed in Ex zone 22 hazardous area. The challenge: ground coal works as conductive dust on the slip rings and brushes. This causes sparks and an explosion can occur.
Therefore, the new MENZEL motor was designed with IP65 protection. Since a squirrel cage motor usually requires a too high starting current and has a lower starting torque, the choice came up to a slip ring motor, especially designed for this specific coal mill drive application. Thanks to its special custom construction, the new replacement motor has received an Ex II 3D Ex tc IIIB T125°C Dc explosion protection marking and reliable delivers top performance in zone 22.
