TÜV attested and award winning dust- and waterproof motor series

Menzel Elektromotoren manufactures IP67 low and medium voltage squirrel-cage motors up to size 355. TÜV Süd has recently attested the dust- and waterproof construction according to protection class IP67 of an entire low voltage motor type series. The series extends to outputs of 400 kW and voltages of 1000 V. In addition, TÜV Süd has attested Menzel’s procedures for IP67 testing, which the manufacturer also offers for medium voltage motors from its own brand up to 11 kV.

Menzel builds IP67 motors with minimal tolerances, waterproof encapsulated cast-iron casings and terminal boxes. The manufacturer holds stock in its main warehouse of all basic components for dust- and waterproof squirrel-cage motors and can therefore realize very short delivery times for standard designs of IP67 motors.

The motors are used worldwide, mainly in pump stations, flood-prone areas, food and drink industries and maritime applications. They can be fully immersed at standstill for a period of 24 hours without any ingress of water. Subsequently, when water has receded, the motors are ready to be switched on again directly.

Case Study: IP67 motors from Berlin defy wet conditions in Cairo pump station

The Egyptian Construction Authority for Potable Water and Wastewater (CAPW) recently sourced four custom-made pump drives from special motor manufacturer Menzel Elektromotoren for installation in a water pump station in Cairo. Because the great volume of water processed in the plant constitutes a lingering threat for any nearby motor, these systems were required to be water-tight enough to sustain submersion at standstill without suffering damage. For this reason, the vertical medium-voltage motors were finished with IP67 ingress protection, an exceptionally high grade of water resistance. 

Menzel provided the units with encapsulated water-proof housings and terminal boxes and specially engineered bearings. Additional gaskets made from special materials were included for each fit, and high surface pressure in all sealing surfaces were then used to achieve a complete sealing that allows these motors at standstill to be exposed to a flooded environment. We used a non-corrosive housing material and subsequent surface treatment and painting process to furnish the housing with a very low surface roughness. In case of imminent submersion of the pump drives in the facility, the motors can now be switched off, safely await the water to recede, and then be restarted right away. The four six-pole squirrel cage motors with 740 kW rated power, 3300 V rated voltage and 990 rpm are now instrumental to help ensure an uninterrupted water supply to the population of Africa's largest metropolis.
